The Staten Island Musuem

The Staten Island Musuem - SIIAS, also known as the Staten Island Institute of Arts and Sciences, is devoted to the history of Staten Island and its people.

Founded in 1881, The Staten Island Institute of Arts & Sciences (SIIAS) is New York’s
only general interest museum and the oldest cultural organization on Staten Island. The
Museum interprets the art, science, and cultural history of Staten Island through
exhibitions taken from a collection of more than 2 million artifacts, along with traveling
exhibits.

The origin of the art collections of the Staten Island Institute date from 1905 and fall into two categories: those that reflect the history, people and culture of Staten Island and those that reflect broad world civilizations. The Museums Natural Science Collection includes an extensive mineral collection, a Lenape Indian exhibit and over 300,000 beetle specimens. The History Archives & Library houses thousands of photographs and
postcards that can be used for research or reproduction purposes.

Public programs are also offered for all age groups, including a Lunch and Learn
program, Science Club Saturday and Ecology walking tours, as well as teacher certificate
and credit courses.

Currently located just across the street from the Staten Island Ferry terminal, the Staten Island Museum is planning to move into the Snug Harbor Cultural Center
