The New York Hall of Science has a reputation, spread from parent to parent and teacher to teacher, for being one of the best field trip destinations. New York’s only hands-on science and technology center, NYHOS may be the standard to meet for science exhibitions, and with over 150 fascinating exhibits, it’s a hard act to follow.
Exhibits are grouped into several major areas, some of which are:
Seeing the Light: an exploration of color and light sponsored by IBM, where visitors can cast a colored shadow, blow a giant soap bubble, and more. Includes daily laser demonstrations.
Realm of the Atom: the world’s first 3-D, working model of a hydrogen atom.
Feedback: demonstrates self-sensing machines and how they work; guests can pedal an airplane propeller, direct a spinning windmill, and examine an 1865 steam engine.
Hidden Kingdoms — The World of Microbes: a fascinating look at the world of micro-organisms. A path through a giant eye of a needle leads visitors to the world’s largest living collection of tiny creatures. Learn how microbes affect our health and environment.
Exhibits are interactive. Kids and adults alike will enjoy playing with these scientific wonders. Throughout the year, temporary exhibitions, live demonstrations, videos and films offer families fun and education. Special weekend workshops and tours are available.
Naturally, this is a very popular field trip for School Groups. Hands-on exhibits encourage students to participate and experiment, increasing their desire to learn. Student Workshops delivered by staff instructors feature Make it & Take It Activities, such as Science Detective (grades 3 - 6): crime solving, fingerprint analyses, etc.; Good Vibrations (grades 3 - 7): microsounds and amplification; The Eyes Have It (grades 3 - 7): exploring 3-D perception, and Green Chemistry (7 - 12): studies water samples and how organisms respond to contaminants, to name just a few. Workshops take about 45 minutes and can include up to 32 students plus teachers. Available for grades 3 thru 12.Science Access Center Workshops, for groups of up to 22, grades K thru 9, cover a variety of science-related subjects, and are ideal for gifted and talented classes, school science clubs, and special education classes.
Supervision requirements provide for: children under 7 — 1 adult per 5 children; children between 7 and 14 — 1 adult per 10students. Programs for Teachers’ Groups, Outreach Programs, and other exciting services available.
Hours: Open September thru February Tuesday - Thursday 9:30am - 2pm, Friday 9:30am - 5pm, Saturday & Sunday 10am - 6pm, closed Mondays. Open March thru June, Monday - Thursday 9:30am - 2pm, Friday 9:30am - 5pm and Saturday & Sunday 10am - 6pm. Open July & August, Monday - Friday 9:30am - 5pm and Saturday & Sunday 10am - 6pm. Closed Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Some different components of the Hall of SDcience may have special hours (Preschool Place, etc.), so call before visiting.
Admission: Adults $11.00, Children ( - 17, College with ID) $8.00, Seniors (62+) $8.00. Science Playground $3.00 per person. Admission to the Hall of Science is FREE on selected days — call for details.
School Groups (10+), $6.00 per person. There may be an additiona fee charged for programs or workshops.
Group Reservations: At least 8 weeks in advance.
Lunch: Reserve a 20 minute lunch time at the Snack-O-Mat, or picnic in park.
Handicapped: Accessible.
Directions: Whitestone Bridge to Van Wyck Expwy to I-495 (LIE) West. Take exit for 108th St. North on 108th St. to 48th Ave. Turn right to 111th St. and follow signs to NY Hall of Science.
Time: 35 minutes east of the George Washington Bridge
