Tarrytown Castle is located in Tarrytown New York. Its construction was begun in 1897 by General Howard Carroll, who with the help of architect Henry F. Kilburn designed the castle in a style like that of Norman fortifications on the Scottish border. The design somewhat resembles Castle Linsmore in Ireland. The castle was orginally named “Carrolcliffe”, and when completed consisted of 45 rooms.
It took over 100 craftsmen several years to complete the castle which was built in two stages. The second stage was finished in 1910. Howard Carroll died in New York City on December 30, 1916. Members of his family occupied the castle until 1940. In 1941, Emerson and Ruth Axe bought The Castle During World II, the castle tower was used as a sighting and listening post.
In 1981 the town of Tarrytown designated The Castle a historic landmark, which protects the outside structure from ever being changed. The castle was purchased in 1994 by the 400 Benedict Corporation, a group of investors lead by Hanspeter and Steffi Walder of Tarrytown.
