Buffalo Niagara International Airport (IATA: BUF, ICAO: KBUF) is an airport located in the town of Cheektowaga in Erie County, New York. The airport is named after the Buffalo Niagara Falls Metro Region. The airport serves Buffalo, New York as well as Southwest Ontario Canada (Shuttle services make connections between Buffalo with Toronto Pearson International Airport in Mississauga, Ontario and John C. Munro International Airport in Hamilton, Ontario).

History

The Greater Buffalo International Airport (As it was then called) was built in 1938 by the Works Progress Administration. However, the airport, which officially opened on May 11, 1939, was quickly outgrown, due to larger planes coming on the scene. A 1955 expansion helped remedy this problem. Another renovation in 1961 extensively remodeled the main terminal building and built a new control tower, as well as adding another concourse for American Airlines. Albany International Airport (IATA: ALB, ICAO: KALB) is an airport of entry serving Albany, New York. It is located in the Town of Colonie about 6 miles (10 km) north of Albany.
Albany International Airport can accept most aircraft. But although the airport is significant and well-equipped, it is essentially a domestic airport, with its only scheduled international flights to Canada.
CommutAir, flying as Continental Connection, had dozens of daily non-stop flights to 20 destinations from a “micro-hub” created at Albany International Airport . At its peak, it operated five banks of flights out of three gates (A1, A1a, A2), completely occupying the airside’s lower-level. The hub was downsized and eventually closed down in 2005, and today only serves Buffalo. (more…)

Adirondack Regional Airport (IATA: SLK, ICAO: KSLK), located 4 miles (6 km) from Harrietstown, is the only commercial airport in New York’s Adirondack Park, the largest state park in the country. The well known Lake Placid and Saranac Lake areas are also located within a few miles of the Adirondack Regional Airport. Regular airline service is provided by Continental Connection which has four flights a day to and from Boston Logan with some flights flying through Clinton County Airport on the way to Boston. The flights are operated by CommutAir which flies the Beechcraft 1900 turboprop aircraft. Airline service is subsidized by the Essential Air Service program. (more…)
