The History Of Oheka
Oheka was named using Otto Hermann Kahn’s name and first initials. Almost a century ago, Mr. Kahn financier and philanthropist created a 443-acre estate. Its centerpiece, Oheka, was a 126 room French Chateau that rose dramatically from the highest point on Long Island’s Gold Coast. At the time of its construction Oheka was, and still is today, the second largest private residence ever built in America. When completed in 1921, it was described by the New York Times as “the finest country estate in America”. (more…)
New Castle, Ny Chappaqua And Millwood
New Castle: Chappaqua and Millwood chronicles the rich history of a northern Westchester town, located some 30 miles north of New York City. The present-day suburb was for almost two centuries an isolated agricultural area, and its chief products were milk and apples. The arrival of the railroads stimulated its growth and attracted affluent New Yorkers such as Horace Greeley to establish summer homes here. As farming declined toward the end of the 1800s, many farms were consolidated into large estates. In the 1900s, most of the former estates and remaining farms were subdivided into suburban residential neighborhoods. Families were drawn to the town by its reputation for religious diversity and outstanding public education. All these aspects of history are described and vividly illustrated in New Castle: Chappaqua and Millwood. The book contains some 200 stunning photographs from the New Castle Historical Society, Westchester County Historical Society, Mount Kisco Historical Society, Chappaqua Public Library, and private collections. It was compiled by members of the New Castle Historical Society and town historian Gray Williams with the hope of generating a greater understanding and appreciation of the town’s history. (more…)

Castle At Tarrytown
400 Benedict Avenue
Tarrytown, NY, 10591
Tarrytown Castle is located in Tarrytown New York. Its construction was begun in 1897 by General Howard Carroll, who with the help of architect Henry F. Kilburn designed the castle in a style like that of Norman fortifications on the Scottish border. The design somewhat resembles Castle Linsmore in Ireland. The castle was orginally named “Carrolcliffe”, and when completed consisted of 45 rooms.
It took over 100 craftsmen several years to complete the castle which was built in two stages. The second stage was finished in 1910. Howard Carroll died in New York City on December 30, 1916. Members of his family occupied the castle until 1940. In 1941, Emerson and Ruth Axe bought The Castle During World II, the castle tower was used as a sighting and listening post. (more…)
Bannerman’s Castle
Pollepel Island is an island in the Hudson River. Also known as Pollopel Island, Pollopel’s Island and Bannerman Island, it is the site of Bannerman’s Castle. While the two versions of the name are “Pollepel” and “Pollopel”, the correct term is “Pollepel”.
Pollepel Island is about 50 miles (80 km) north of New York City and about 1,000 feet (300 m) from the Hudson’s eastern shore. It contains about 6.5 acres — most of it rock. During the Revolutionary War, patriots attempted to prevent the British from passing upstream by running the “Hudson River Chain” from the island to each shore. The chain contained 106 upright logs tipped with iron points. General George Washington later signed a plan to use the island as a military prison, however there has been no evidence that a prison was ever built there. (more…)
